Welcome to Berlin #20

CW 34/2021

Finally we can say that life has returned to our Orania.Stage! And today we would like to present you some of the wonderful people letting us take part in their lifes for a few hours six times a week. But first: let us give you a special recommendation outside of our beautiful box.

XJAZZ! festival is an established institution in the district of Kreuzberg since 2014. Every May highclass modern jazz concerts take place in a special spot in our neighbourhood. Unfortunately this year no audience was allowed inside the church Emmauskirche on square Lausitzer Platz. Lucky us - there are some terrific videos from the streamings left now. Just get yourself a little excitement for the next year! In case you are in town this weekend (28/29 August), you can experience XJAZZ! WEEKENDER live - a free open air event with a fantastic line-up of great Berlin Jazz artists at Funkhaus Berlin directly located at the river Spree.

Everything you can enjoy on our Orania.Stage lies in jazz pianist Matti Klein´s hands. He has been on stage worldwide for many years now, in the position of artistic director of successful bands as well as artist of modern and vintage pianos. He was recently on tour with his Matti Klein Soul Trio. Just get yourself a first impression, if you like. They play the really good stuff. Complex and deep, but emotionally immediately accesible. From Monday to Wednesday the evenings at the Orania.Restaurant belong to the piano music lovers. This Tuesday for example it was the Latvian born Agita Rando, who charmed us. She could also do this playing the organ, as she has not only studied sacral music and jazz piano, but also the classical organ. Well, at Orania.Berlin our Steinway grand piano has to do. This one at least weighs half a ton and is 2.74m long. We think this is quite something, too.

You have now got to know Matti already. Tonight at 8pm he meets the versatile percussionist Tayfun Schulzke on our Orania.Stage. Tayfun does not only bring African rhythms on stage, but also plays the Indian tabla, Cuban congas and the internationally beloved cajón. A marvellous journey around the world as part of our Orania.Unplugged series.

For Orania.Voices tomorrow, Friday, 27 August, La BOSSA Duo will be on stage. Miriam Netti, who was born in Italy´s region of Puglia, thrills the audience singing and playing the piano, while Swedish jazz artist Johan Leijonhufvud plays the guitar. They offer a fine selection of jazz standards as well as some nice soft Brazilian melodies.

“Communicable music“ is what Reggie Moore calls his play. His intense, yet intimate piano manages to touch our soul so quickly that we immediatley know what he means by that. You can experience it yourself this Saturday, 28 August, from 9pm, when he will pay tribute to the great late pianist Bill Evans, accompanied by Italian bass player Igor Spallati and drummer Ernst Bier. Would you like a little sneak preview?

We now have the pleasure to announce something very special. The day is coming closer, when every Sunday our Orania.BreakfastClub will turn your weekend into a "Lazy Sunday". Every Sunday at lunchtime a fabulous eight course meal will be served by our great BreakfastClub Team, accompanied by groovy live music. This is as much as you get today... but while you are waiting for your Lazy Sundays to arrive, just come around again some time.
