Welcome to Berlin #31

CW 04/2022

Yes, this is Berlin. Even if it usually doesn´t stay for too long, even we get to see snow every now and then. And if you should get to enjoy these rare moments someday, we will help you to know how to make the most of it today.

If you haven´t seen it with your own eyes, it might be hard to imagine from what kind of “hills“ or rather tiny elevations Berlin´s kids manage to sledge down. Of course we would recomend you small mountains as Teufelsberg (if you should be living by real mountains, please don´t laugh too loud. All the wishful thinking in the world cannot elevate us more than this hill in the very West of the city), but even parks in our neighbourhood as Görlitzer Park or Viktoriapark are popular destinations among the small ones. Here comes a small overview with the best sledding hills in the city.

Talking about winter activities we mustn´t forget ice skating, of course. One should never try their luck on frozen lakes or rivers, but there are great professional ice rinks in the city. For example the one at Seebad Friedrichshagen, located directly at the pitoresque lake Müggelsee. A good opportunity to take a walk here, too.

It is a lesson for life, if you manage to build a snowman or -woman with just two centimetres of snow. That´s the Berlin Street School you might have heard of!

Winter also brings along a little goodie for the grown-ups, too. Free parking spaces even seem to compete for cars to fill them these frosty days - nothing you get to see every day.

After all this physical effort we think we deserve a snack. Today´s theme brings us back to an earlier recommendation, the weekly market on - mind the name, please! - Winterfeldtplatz. There´s a culinary delight for every taste here on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Our favourite is the Swabian Maultaschen-Burger by Teig & Füllung. If you haven´t tried Maultauschen, these huge, Ravioli-like stuffed noodles yet, now´s the time! They also offer the traditional version that goes with potatoe salad or soup.

Wow, we are chilled to the bone. We decide to warm up in the USA now, in New York City and Chicago. A bit too far, you say? Well, then let´s go to the district of Charlottenburg, which offers a part of the USA at the moment. The gallery Hermann Noack currently shows the famous street photographies of Vivian Meier in the exhibition “Streetqueen“. They also show some of here Super-8-films and the documentation about the artist, that has been nominated for an Oscar. This wonderful mixture is a great way to get to know Vivian Meier´s art.

We´ve had enough fresh air for today and are looking forward to our favourite spot in the Orania.Restaurant, right next to fireplace. And to tonight´s concert, of course! Yes, not leaving home in winter has advantages, too…
