„Alles Neue bringt der Mai“ - a common German saying about month May´s power to bring new energy and ideas. The saying is a bit overused, but the meaning is true nevertheless, especially this year. The political situation on this continent, the Covid pandemic - there are enough reasons to look ahead. So let´s see what this year´s May has got for us!

Modern Jazz from Barcelona? Complex improvisations on four instruments? An awardwinning young singer from Munich, who already performed onstage with Bobby McFerrin? You can have it all at XJAZZ! Festival 2022 from 04 until 08 May. The heart of the musical event will one more time be church Emmauskirche, but the concerts will take place on stages in all of the district of Kreuzberg - including ours, of course. Tickets on XJAZZ!´s website - first come, first served…

“The world´s best club“, but also “Berlin´s hardest door“. These are some of the descriptions of the city´s legendary Berghain. The former district heating plant is named after the district of Kreuzberg-Friedrichshain and houses one of the bestknown techno clubs in the world, the legendary panorama bar, various other club rooms as well as the hall at Berghain, an exhibition venue and performance space. Those, who have never been there before, should prepare for their first visit - in order not to be turned away on the door after standing in line for an hour. Here´s a quick overview of how you might get in.

Those who prefer looking over participating will surely find what they´re looking for at this year´s Performing Arts Festival. From 24 until 29 May the city´s motto will once again be: “All Berlin´s a stage.“. Sorry, William, for reinterpreting your words. Countless venues will host events celebrating the independent performing arts and the community´s variety - with dance performances, circus acts and theater, among many other highlights.

It tends to happen that our name is confused with Urania Berlin, a cultural education organisation. Our goals are hospitality as well as the creation of great cultural and gastronomic experiences for a diverse group of people, whereas Urania aims towards making science accessible to a broad audience. We consider both of it extremely important, treat ourselves with some bar food and then head off to the district of Schöneberg. Let´s see, whether “Preacher Slam“, Poetry Slam combined with various religious contents, is as inspiring as we think it is.

Talking about Schöneberg: the next time you get to the vibrant neighbourhood of Akazienstraße, we recommend participating in an important quarter discussion. The question is, whether Jones Ice Cream or Kiezeis produce and sell the best ice cream. A hard decision for many - our winner is Jones for sure, if only for the hand rolled butter waffers. We are looking forward to your opinions as an answer to this newsletter.

Talking about the new joys that May brings, we mustn´t forget mother nature, of course. How beautiful, when Berlin is that green again! Because we cannot get enough of this, we have to get some flowers for our flats, too. But, to be honest - just putting them into a vase can get so boring. If you also want to learn how to make art with flowers, Berlin Flower School is your place to be! The workshops of this professional florists´ educational centre usually only last a few days - a good opportunity to change our job for another one. But just for some days, of course, no worries.
But now we hear our Mamas calling! We don´t want to miss our own recommendations and need to get back home to enjoy today´s XJAZZ! concert. See you there?
