Welcome to Berlin #50

November 2022

November is here – and brings a month full of contradictions. The day before Halloween the cafés were crowded with sun seekers and warmth lovers, who couldn´t believe they were having their espresso in Berlin and not Naples. But before all of them can even think about replacing their favourite hot drink with glühwein for a while, christmas time is there already! November brings us the first Sunday in Advent on 27.

Let´s have a look on how to best spend our time until then in this exciting city.

First things first: today marks the beginning of the 59th edition of Jazzfest Berlin. After two years of hybrid listening, this year you can enjoy all of the music live on stage. And the stages will not only be the main event space Haus der Berliner Festspiele, but also two smaller clubs and famous Kaiser Wilhelm memorial church. Should you not get lucky with buying tickets anymore, please don´t be sad. Our jazz concerts aren´t bad at all, either.

This is no weekend for getting bored: Bazaar Berlin returns to Messe Berlin (for the 60th time). Germany´s most important international trade fair for arts and crafts impresses by its variety as well as its mere size. But we´ve fallen in love with the theme world “Fair & Social“, selling fair trade and produced natural products. And the fashion here can be admired in an exclusive fair trade fashion show on Friday and Saturday, 2 and 5 pm. We like. (© Photos: Messe Berlin GmbH)

All of you rather seeking intellectual joys than acoustic pleasures or shopping experiences will surely be more than happy with this year´s Science Week. More than 200 events, workshops, discussions and VR experiences – we´re sure you will find something for you. (© Foto: Falling Walls Foundation)

What is the one thing that mustn´t be missing on your trip to Berlin? You´re absolutely right: a walk in the park.

If you leave behind the Schöneberg part of the park taking the bridge Volksparksteg, Volkspark Wilmersdorf transforms into a blossoming sea of colours even today. Well, alright, maybe a pond of colours. We are going to admire the sea, as soon as spring returns.

If you take the Uhlandstraße at the end of the park in Northern direction until you can take Pariser Straße on your left for another fifty meters, you get to one of the city´s most vivid squares. Ludwigkirchplatz is the perfect place for an early sundowner while watching the kids play table tennis or learne to drive the unicycle. And again: that doesn´t feel so different to an afternoon in Bella Italia…

By the way: Ludwigkirchplatz also is the place to be for you and your kids, if you want to experience a lovely German tradition on 11 November. You meet infront of the church at 5 pm, where the tale of St. Martin, who shared his coat with a poor man on a cold winter night, will be performed. After that the kids will take a short walk to the church at Hohenzollernplatz, carrying selfmade lanterns and usually singing a song about that. But don´t worry: there´s a reward for the parents accompanying the smaller ones, too. Once you´ve arrived at your destination, an open fire as well as warming glühwein (German mulled wine) will be waiting for you. Believe us: it´s worth it!

For our last recommendation for today we don´t need to think of our gloves again. Chamäleon Berlin, theatre for current international circus art inside of Hackesche Höfe, hosts the group Gravity & Other Myths with their programme “Out of Chaos“. Outstanding acrobatic skills combined with short passages of spoken text passages in German and English give the audience an impression of how it feels for the artists to be on stage.

Fancy a change from tinder and parship? Then you should quickly book your ticket for 12 November and enjoy the show after the show: “Singles & Theater Lovers“.

For all of you, who don´t want to be this open about it, there´s still the good old way of getting to know somebody at the bar. If you need any help with this – how to flirt in German, which drink to choose etc. – you know where to find us.
