Welcome to Berlin #77

February 2025

Isn´t this the perfect motto to start into February 2025? Yes, it is one of the year´s coldest months – but also the shortest one. And the days have already started to get longer again. So: time for some well-dosed optimism and brave decisions! We will take care of your entertainment and inspiration in Berlin in this Orania.Newsletter, as always on the first Thursday of each month.

If thinking pink is currently a bit hard for you: a more positive attitude towards the world we live in can sometimes be created by taking a look into the past. “Roads not taken. Or: things could have turned out differently.” is an exhibition by Deutsches Historisches Museum aiming at this exact goal. There are moments in the German past we don´t want to go back to – but as far as we know there is no time machine yet, anyway.
The exhibition depicts carefully chosen historical events between 1848 and 1989 and compares them to alternative endings, also taking a look on the probabilities of the respective (fictional) outcome. A thrilling game of “What would have happened, if…?” and an exciting search for traces of today´s origins. (© photo: Deutsches Historisches Museum/David von Becker)

This is also part of the intention of “Ku´damm 59 – Das Musical”, just in a more harmless, musical way. Unfortunately, it doesn´t carry English surtitles – but the vibes of post-war Germany at the end of the 1950s might still be interesting for a non-German-speaking audience. On stage until 23 February at Theater des Westens.

Would you rather not dig into the past, but just get distracted from your everyday life a bit? Pop Air – art is inflatable offers more than 99 red balloons. At Balloon Museum we are allowed to touch the airy works of art – and might even be touched by them. At Arena Berlin in Treptow until 20 April.

Yes, alright, we like to hole up at home in cold winter times. We don´t even try to deny it. But we will do better in the new year! Let´s start with a long walk in park Tiergarten. When lakes and canals start to freeze and the pale light falls through the empty trees, there´s a special charm to that, too.

It´s February once again – meaning it´s time for Berlinale (from 13 until 23 February)! Our winter-must-do. And as always: good luck trying to get tickets.

By the time this Orania.Newsletter is written, the list of the participating cinemas of Berlinale hasn't been published yet – but it is very probable that Delphi Filmpalast will take part once again. Should you not have experienced the spacious elegance of Germanys largest arthouse cinema hall, please plan a visit on your next trip to Berlin, watching a Berlinale film or their regular, well-sorted programme. Usually the movies are shown in their original language, sometimes with subtitles in German or English.

Fashion Week is over now – but that was never a reason to dress carelessly, was it? The five second hand shops of Pick´n´Weight in Berlin make it easy to discover new old beauties for our wardrobe, even on a small budget. How about a visit before meeting this year´s Valentine´s date?

For all of you, who are entitled to vote in Germany, a small reminder: 23 February is Election Day for the German Bundestag. Whether you choose voting postal or live – the most important decision is to (get informed) and vote! And for the party afterwards or drowning your disappointment, we are always there for you with our welcoming Orania.Bar.Atmosphere. Looking forward to it!
