Welcome to Berlin #79

April 2025

Spring awakening in Berlin! For some of us this might bring back feelings that were thought to be lost for a while.

…and drives some other folks completely crazy. These cakes look delicious, but definitely not like Peach Melba. A late April joke? Maybe. Always possible in this city.

No plans for the Easter holidays yet? No problem. Orania.Berlin has got you covered! How about a medieval knight festival at Zitadelle Spandau? This is going to keep the young ones busy for longer than the hunt for Easter eggs. Would you prefer some nice live music for the holidays? Off to Easter Festival on Schmiljanstraße in Friedenau you go then. Museumsdorf Düppel is the right place to visit, if you want to focus more on sustainability this year. As always, it´s not getting boring in the capital.

The combination of "not boring" and sustainability is exactly what the NGO Green Kayak puts its focus on. Burning some calories kayaking for free and helping to clean Berlin´s canals and rivers from garbage at the same time – the concept is as simple as it is pleasant. The season starts in the middle of this month.

Hanfmuseum Berlin in Nikolai quarter has also been caring for a naturale way of living since 1994. The hemp plant as an allrounder is being portrayed here from a botanical, cultural and legal perspective. There´s even a special exhibition focussing on the latter – one year of Germany´s cannabis legalisation. We´d say: go and experience it quickly before everything changes again… (© photo: Carina von Wehner)

Those of you we got into the right mood for visiting museums now, should visit fabulous Technikmuseum again. The special exhibition "The City Alive" displays an associative game invented by the photographers´ collective Cadavre Exquis. Its 19 photographers have started the picture chain portrayed at the museum for one year with 70 photographs and we are invited to follow their thoughts. Furthermore, we can send our own visual conclusions to Technikmuseum, which publishes one of the visitors´ pictures in one of the empty frames at the end of the exhibition every month. By the way: this show is part of EMOP – we reported.

International Theatre Day on 27 March and you couldn´t celebrate it properly, because your students´ wallet had to be emptied on other things? No worries, we know how to solve the problem: come to Studi- und Azubiticketmarkt by Berlin Bühnen on 24 April and ease your hunger for the performing arts! From 3 to 7 pm Podewil at Klosterstern will host the event for all the students and apprentices who want to get their 5 € tickets for one of the numerous participating theatres, concert halls and opera houses.

Attention, Gen Z: most of the ticket counters only accept cash payments. That was the thing with the coins and the banknotes.

Save the date! On 27 we send you home directly – or even better: to your room directly. Right at the beginning of Kitchen Impossible´s 10th season, our very own Philipp Vogel and kitchen buddy Tim Mälzer will meet up for a fun duel once again. This time we can look forward to ducks, Blaue Funken and a black box of another colour. But we don´t want to spoil too much. 8:15 pm on VOX. (© photo: RTL / Endemol Shine / Trang Thuy Nguyen)

If trying to imitate Vogel´s and Mälzer´s culinary abilities doesn´t always work as planned and your breakfast menu for the 1 May rather looks like labour dispute than holiday, just come over. Orania.BreakfastClub is your place to be, if you care for more than coffee for your first meal of the day.
