“Jamal knocked me out with his concept of space…his lightness of touch, his understatement, and the way he phrases notes and chords and passages.” — Miles Davis

An evening of music in a classic trio setting exploring the repertoire and arrangements of Ahmad Jamal (1930–2023). Jamal was a true scientist of sound in his use of space, silence and dynamics. His tightly crafted, intricate arrangements transformed the language of the piano trio, and their influence continues to shape generations of musicians.

Led by Berlin-based pianist and Orania stalwart Declan Forde, the trio will explore classic arrangements from Jamal's legendary recordings at the Pershing, the Alhambra and the Blackhawk, celebrating one of the most original and influential voices in Jazz history.

Declan Forde is a Scottish pianist from Glasgow who has been a vital part of Berlin’s Jazz scene since 2014. His music explores the delicate balance between tradition and innovation, blending a deep reverence for the history of improvised music with a fearless curiosity for the unknown. His performances can shift in an instant from lyrical restraint to fearless abstraction, yet remain grounded in deep swing, spontaneous interaction and an irrepressible sense of humour.

You'll be hearing Declan Forde (piano), Jordan Dinsdale (drums) and James Banner / Igor Spallati (bass).
